Aphoyo's shyest (and most recent) student is a sweet 10-year-old girl who stared at the ground but still shook my hand when I offered. She even managed to crack a grin as we told her, “Aphoyo a-teem” (We are happy to meet you).

Beifield’s mother divorced when she was very young and her father is gone. Her mother was never educated (as most lived in displacement camps during her formative years) and so the two of them survive on the shillings her mother earns for doing other people’s laundry. Beifield stopped going to school a long time ago.
ut back in April 2016, that changed. Peter and Christine heard about Beifield and as soon as we were able to give the go-ahead from the US (thanks to our new sponsors!) Beifield was enrolled in school for the first time in years.
Beifield’s english is poor, she is 4 years behind: at ten-years-old she sits in a primary 2 (second grade) classroom. But she is happy to be at school. She is a good study. We are thrilled to have her.

Welcome to Aphoyo, Beifield.
